McDonald’s recently faced an international technology outage, leading to temporary closures in Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, and the UK. Contrary to initial concerns, the issue was not related to cyber-security. With most restaurants now reopened, McDonald’s expressed gratitude to customers and staff for their patience. Here’s the company’s response:
Dear customers,
Earlier today, we experienced a technology outage which impacted all of our restaurants.
This wasn’t related to a cybersecurity event and most restaurants have now re-opened and are serving up all your faves.
A huge thank you to our customers and our hard-working crew for their patience, we’re sorry for the inconvenience.

Just like during any other outage, X (previously Twitter) quickly flooded with memes.
You must have heard about the IT outage at the famous #McDonalds store… Well, here’s a snap caught of him actually coming out of IT… After his successful interview to replace Ronald… But IT remains to be seen if the kids will be able to keep down their chicken nuggets… pic.twitter.com/OxDdOkQm8x

@McDonaldsUK when did you start getting political? @Conservatives you should boycott McDonald’s.

Is “IT outage” the placeholder term for “hack” until it’s proven? Apart from the recent Optus outage, I don’t recall another “ IT incident” of this scale in Australia. More to come ? https://t.co/oWsEiRLsJU#mcdonaldsoutage #maccas

I would love to think there are some clever pro-Palestinian hackers causing the McDonalds’ system outage in several countries.
This comes on the back of the company announcing boycotts have cost it $7 billion.
Resist!
